Chequers Inn. Kent

The ghost of Dick Turpin is reputed to haunt this old public house in Smarden, Kent.

This small but pleasantly well-preserved inn in Smarden, Kent, which has a history dating back to the 14th century, features its very own haunted room inhabited by the ghost of a soldier from the Napoleonic wars. It is said that he woke up mid-robbery and, in the ensuing struggle, he suffered a fatal knife-wound.

More recent accounts include a barmaid  seeing a ‘gentleman in green velvet’ , this apparition has also seen by several customers, they describe a ‘man in green velvet wearing a hat with a plume, sitting at a table writing with a quill pen’. It is believed the man in green is the ghost of Dick Turpin himself.

A number of hauntings have been reported in the village of Pluckley. The village has a reputation as the most haunted in England, so it is perhaps not surprising that it also has a phantom hitchhiker.

Raymond Breakspear a local Taxi-driver, was flagged down by a figure at the side of the road at about 3am one morning. The figure then got into the back seat. Breakspear then turned to ask the man where he would like to go, he was surprised to find no one there.
