Dating from Tudor times the house is haunted by a Royalist who haunts the Cavalier Room (originally called the Crimson Room).
The Royalist Ghost is believed to be the ghost of Sir John Stawell. In life at the end of the English Civil War, Stawell was stripped of his wealth and possessions (which included Avebury Manor). A strong smell of roses warns of his appearance.
The house is also the haunt of The White Lady, she is thought to be a ghost of a young woman, who loved a Cavalier during the Civil War years. She flung herself to her death from the upstairs window. Her ghost has a habit of accompanying visitors though the grounds and house.
I am interested in some more information about ghost weekends or nights in Avebury.
Please can you send me some more information.
