Phantom soldiers are said to have been seen on the moor many times. In 1932 Arthur Wright was driving through the moor when he suddenly saw a group of long haired men in cloaks and Cavalier hats who suddenly vanished. This visitation was again seen in 1968 and 1992.

he Royalist Ghost is believed to be the ghost of Sir John Stawell.

Dating from Tudor times the house is haunted by a Royalist who haunts the Cavalier Room (originally called the Crimson Room).

The Royalist Ghost is believed to be the ghost of Sir John Stawell. In life at the end of the English Civil War, Stawell was stripped of his wealth and possessions (which included Avebury Manor). A strong smell of roses warns of his appearance.
