As I gazed at the opposite wall, which seemed to dissolve before my eyes, the room was filled with a choking dust and gritty fog, and through the haze I saw a long procession of habited monks. Slowly they passed along a hidden flight of steps, their wooden patterns sounding in ghostly rhythm as they climbed.”
